In the run up to 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Zimbabwe Free Range Poultry Association (ZFRPA), we are celebrating rural poultry champions who have not only embraced free-range production but turned it into thriving businesses. One such trailblazer is Mrs. Sibanda, a passionate poultry farmer based in Mbalabala, Umzingwane District, Matabeleland South.

From a Flock to a Farm

Since starting her poultry journey in 2018, Mrs. Sibanda has grown from raising a handful of birds to managing up to 400 Road Runner chickens at peak production. She currently keeps around 150 point-of-lay mixed breed hens, showing her dedication to maintaining a healthy and productive flock.

Her journey, however, goes far beyond just rearing chickens. Mrs. Sibanda has tapped into multiple streams within poultry farming. She operates a 560-egg capacity solar-powered incubator, allowing her to hatch and supply day-old chicks to customers. She supplies chickens and chicks to farmers in Chiredzi, Masvingo, Beitbridge, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls — a testament to her growing reputation and market footprint.

“I never imagined my chickens would reach such faraway places,” she says. “The demand keeps growing, especially for healthy, home-grown birds.”

Integrated and Sustainable

Mrs. Sibanda’s rural homestead is a model of sustainable farming. Chicken manure from her coop is used to fertilize her lush garden and orchard, where she grows tomatoes, green peppers, watermelons, and a variety of leafy vegetables. This integrated system reduces waste and boosts productivity — a smart, circular approach to rural agriculture.

A long-time member of ZFRPA, Mrs. Sibanda credits the association with helping her grow through access to training in improved poultry management, networking opportunities with fellow farmers, and better understanding of markets and pricing strategies

“ZFRPA has been my backbone,” she says. “I’ve learned, grown, and built a business I’m proud of — right here at my rural home.”

A Call to Rural Farmers

Mrs. Sibanda’s story is not just a celebration — it’s an invitation. With the right knowledge, tools, and networks, rural poultry farming can become a profitable venture. She urges other women, youths, and rural families to take the step from subsistence to commercial Road Runner production.

“Start small, grow steadily, and think beyond your village,” she advises. “The market is out there — even as far as Victoria Falls.”

As ZFRPA celebrates a decade of transforming lives through free-range poultry, Mrs. Sibanda is living proof that rural farming isn’t just about survival — it’s about building sustainable livelihoods and leaving a legacy.
